Entry Requirements

PLEASE NOTE: The National Cyber Security Alliance and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center reserve the right to reject any posters or videos that contain content that does not meet the entry requirements or judging criteria or are deemed inappropriate for the purposes of this contest.

Entry Requirements
Posters and videos/podcasts must explain computer security problems and specific actions students can take to safeguard their computers or personal information. Videos or podcasts must be two minutes or less for use in training or instruction. Entry guidelines include:

  • Contestants
    • Contest participants must currently be enrolled in a U.S. private or public school. U.S. home schoolers are also welcome.
    • Grade levels are K-5, 6-8 and 9-12.
    • There are two categories, video/podcast and poster
    • Each grade level will compete for 3 top prizes in both the video/podcast and poster category.
    • An individual student or a group of students may submit one video/podcast and one poster submission. Multiple submissions within each category are not allowed. No more than one submission per category per individual or group is permissible.
    • Submissions must be made online. Parents of contestants will be asked to provide contact information and accept the Program Release and Clearance Authorization form.
    • All entries must include a brief creator statement that describes how the piece relates to the theme. 
    • Contestants must be willing to make minor adjustments if deemed necessary and as specified based on feedback from the judges.

  • Video or Podcast Production

    • Videos or podcasts must be developed by students for a broad student audience. No professional (paid) assistance may be used in production of the video or podcast. Any entry doing so will be disqualified. Note: teachers, support staff and parents may offer minimal technical support but cannot aid in the creative process.
    • PLEASE NOTE: The maximum video/ pod cast length is two minutes.
    • Minimal credits are allowed–limited to 10 seconds–at the end of the video or podcast.
    • Videos or podcasts should include the following "Terms of Use" statement after the credits. Leave five seconds of black between credits or end of program and the "Terms of Use" statement.
      While entrants in the K12 Security Awareness Video Contest retain ownership of their submissions, by participating in the Contest entrants also grant to the National Cyber Security Alliance, the Multi-Sate Information Sharing and Analysis Center and educational institutions an irrevocable license to copy, edit, distribute, display, and make such other educational and non-commercial uses as they wish in their discretion and in any format or medium. Without limiting the foregoing, video or podcast submissions may be re-filed or reproduced for quality reasons.
    • Winning video submissions must be able to submit a word document (.doc) or text file (.txt) so that closed captions can be added.
    • Videos must be in 640x480 pixel resolution in any of the following formats:
      • QuickTime (.mov)-H.264
      • Windows AVI (.avi)
      • Windows Media (.wmv)-Windows Media9
      • MPEG-4 (.m4v/mp

  • Poster Guidelines

    • Each poster entry must be original artwork, including digital art or photos,  by the student(s) for a broad student audience. Professional assistance (paid) is not allowed and will disqualify any entry. Note: teachers, support staff and parents may offer minimal technical support but cannot aid in the creative process.
    • Digital resolution of each entry must be sufficient to be printed at a maximum of 24 inches by 36 inches without print scaling (minimum 300 dpi).
    • Electronic formats allowed: JPEG, GIF and PDF. The artist is responsible for conversion to digital format. Please be certain that all of the artwork image is captured when converted (scanned) to electronic format.
    • Traditional (paper) versions of poster allowed (8 ½” x 11” – 11” x 17”).

  • Content for Poster, Video/Podcasts

    • Content must be generic, i.e., no specific school or application or vendor names or identifying information such as a unique school façade, town landmark or geographic marker should be referenced.
    • Subject matter may be about general security awareness or focus on one specific topic (see judging criteria below for list of topics). Visit www.StaySafeOnline.org and www.MSISAC.org to learn more about cyber security issues. (Other websites: www.us-cert.gov and www.onguardonline.gov)
    • Must be in good taste and appropriate for K-12 populations.
    • Must address topics that will retain relevance for one to two years (avoid narrow technology-specific topics such as a specific threat, specific virus, and so forth).
    • Must be original and not infringe upon any copyright, trademark, or other proprietary right.
