The National Cyber Security Alliance is pleased to present our August edition of our Board Member Spotlight. Our Board member companies are leaders in cybersecurity education and awareness and are an integral part of making the organization a successful public-private partnership.
Get to know Joshua Douglas, Senior Vice President of Product & Threat Intelligence at Mimecast in this Board Member Spotlight.
What is the role of the Governance Committee and what has your experience been, as chair?
The governance committee oversees and establishes policies while monitoring the implementation with the goal of leading the organization toward prosperity and sustainability. In short we are responsible for governing how the board manages itself. Given that I have been in the seat for a short period of time, I am very happy to see how well this organization has been run to date!
What does it mean to you to be a Board Member of the National Cyber Security Alliance?
It is a massive honor to be on the board serving a greater good that is more than an individual or company while focusing on solid ways to drive human error down through global cyber security awareness.
What are your goals for the National Cyber Security Alliance?
Ultimately, we need to remove barriers for companies to train their teams while driving out human error caused by a lack of awareness. This means we want the National Cyber Security Alliance to lead the way in this endeavor while becoming sustainable, not only through membership and events, but also through well minded investments that benefit the community without a single company in mind.
What do you love most about your security awareness work at Mimecast?
I came to Mimecast because of our ability to help a broader audience, companies in need of easy to use and highly effective security awareness and defense capabilities. With that in mind, I focus on and love stopping bad things from happening to good organizations!
How does Mimecast’s cybersecurity interests align with the National Cyber Security Alliance mission to educate and empower our global digital society?
Mimecast, much like the National Cyber Security Alliance, is focused on reducing threats from taking advantage of good organizations globally, regardless of the size or industry. We also believe in the power of partnerships to make this happen. At the end of the day, we are both focused on using positive measures to empower and educate the world on cybersecurity best practices through great awareness training content. It is part of our mission to educate teams and employees along the way to resiliency.
What is one thing you learned this year about security awareness?
I love this question because I get excited about daily learning and the biggest one this year would probably be that security “pros,” like me, can make mistakes and learn from those in other industries and roles! That includes my awesome partner in life and my kids. Always listen to the mistakes others have made and the guidance they can give you, as it can save you time and money!
How would you describe your leadership style?
I have been blessed to have been coached by many amazing leaders in my career and they all carry this in common: they are servant leaders. I would like to say my leadership style is the same. Meaning I am fair, give and expect feedback, all while removing barriers for those whom I serve, my customers, and my team!
As you know, “Cybersecurity Awareness Month” was previously “National Cyber Security Awareness Month.” It was changed in 2020 to reflect the global audience and response the campaign has received. In your opinion, what does this change represent?
I love my country and pride in one’s nation is something we should all have day in and day out. With that said, we also have a duty to our society as a whole to grow cyber security awareness globally. To me, this represents that our board and the members have a duty to ensure that cyber security is promoted to eliminate human error that causes a mass majority of breaches. It also means we look to embody the best by doing our best for everyone, regardless of where they sit in the world.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
Coaching lacrosse, running, fishing, and traveling with my family.
What National Cyber Security Alliance event or resource has been your favorite thus far?
Cybersecurity Awareness Month is my favorite, not only because of our involvement, but because it’s had an impact on me since it first started while I was working at Raytheon (also a National Cyber Security Alliance board member company!) , as a CISO training our company. Now at Mimecast, Cybersecurity Awareness Month still plays a role in my work. The broad reach has been amazing, even in my journey!
