Want to stay safe online but not sure where to start? Consumer Reports has you covered. As an independent and trusted nonprofit with a proven track record of providing consumers with truth, transparency, and fairness, Consumer Reports and the Digital Lab are committed to transforming consumer safety in our digital world.
Though we enjoy the utility of digital products and services, we are increasingly giving our personal information in exchange for convenience, knowledge, or entertainment. At Consumer Reports, we know your personal information should remain private and protected so we want to help you keep it that way.
Our newest tool, Security Planner, empowers citizens with trusted digital knowledge they need to be safer in their everyday lives. Security Planner is free and easy-to-use. It offers a step-by-step guide that is tailored to each user. In a three-step process, users are asked to indicate where they store private information, how they want to protect themselves, and any concerns they have online. Once completed, Security Planner provides users with a personalized action plan that contains details on steps they can take to protect themselves in the spaces they are in or with the tools they are using.
Most notably, recommendations are made by a committee of Consumer Reports experts in digital security and have gone through a rigorous peer review process, led by Consumer Reports and Citizen Lab. As an independent, mission-driven organization, Consumer Reports never accepts money or services in exchange for making recommendations. CR Security Planner is designed to be accessible for the average digital user who might be feeling overwhelmed at the amount of security recommendations found online, sometimes from untrusted or biased sources.
Security Planner has already been reviewed and supported by hundreds of digital security leaders and honored as an introductory tool to help users take their first (second? third?) step to protecting themselves online. As the tool continues to evolve, so will the recommendations and expert opinions provided.
At Consumer Reports, we are dedicated to ensuring the digital safety of consumers through our research, events, and actions. Our team hosts monthly Digital Wellness workshops that focus on educating consumers on how to protect themselves online through tutorials, activities, and real world examples.
As part of our new release, we will be hosting three workshops in the month of October to share CR Security Planner, discuss how to use it, and test your privacy knowledge through interactive case studies. Join us on either October 20th at 1pm ET, or October 22nd at 3pm ET, or October 28th at 1pm ET to meet our team, discuss your digital privacy concerns, and learn how to protect yourself. Be sure to RSVP to one of the events on our site.
If you can’t attend one of the events, don’t worry! You can visit securityplanner.consumerreports.org today and complete the questions to get your personalized recommendations.
