The Cybersecurity Attitudes and Behaviors Report

Each year, we release research to better understand the public’s security behavior and to act as a call to action for more secure habits online.

A global movement

Cybersecurity Awareness Month began in 2004, when the National Cybersecurity Alliance (then spelled "National Cyber Security Alliance") launched the initiative in partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The goal was to help people understand that staying safe online was becoming an essential part of everyday life.

The campaign was built around a simple idea that remains relevant over two decades later: cybersecurity is a shared responsibility.

Over the years, Cybersecurity Awareness Month grew from a U.S. awareness effort into a global campaign involving governments, businesses, nonprofits, schools, community organizations, and individuals. Its messages evolved alongside the technology people use and the threats they face, from the rise of mobile devices, social media, and online banking to ransomware, identity theft, social engineering, data breaches, and today's AI-assisted scams.

NCA and CISA: A public-private partnership

The National Cybersecurity Alliance has co-led Cybersecurity Awareness Month since its creation in 2004. Today, NCA leads the campaign with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the federal agency launched in 2018 as a component of DHS and responsible for leading national efforts to strengthen cybersecurity and resilience.

That partnership reflects a fundamental fact about cybersecurity: no single organization can solve the problem alone. Government can provide leadership and resources, while tech companies can build safer products and services. Businesses and other organizations can protect their systems and the people who use them. Individuals, who we think should usually be at the center of all cybersecurity decisions, can make security-conscious choices in their everyday lives.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month brings those efforts together around a common purpose.

The campaign has also received sustained recognition from the U.S. government over the years, including presidential proclamations from five administrations, as well as participation from federal agencies and leaders. Its continued support reflects how fundamentally cybersecurity has become connected to national security, economic activity, critical infrastructure, privacy, and everyday life.

Why Cybersecurity Awareness Month still matters

More than 20 years after its launch, the need for security awareness has only grown. For many of us, our "digital lives" are, basically, our lives! We work, learn, shop, communicate, manage finances, access healthcare, and maintain relationships through connected devices and online services. This also means criminals have more opportunities to exploit those connections.

We believe cybersecurity is more than responding to the latest threats — it's about the small decisions everyday people make every day.

That is why Cybersecurity Awareness Month continues to emphasize practical behaviors that can make a meaningful difference: strong passwords, multifactor authentication, timely software updates, and recognizing suspicious messages. These may seem like small actions. When millions of people and organizations adopt those habits, however, those actions collectively make society harder for cybercriminals to exploit.

That has always been the larger purpose of Cybersecurity Awareness Month: turning cybersecurity from a distant, technical topic into something everyone can understand and act on.

And after more than two decades, the message remains as relevant as ever: we all have a role to play in making our interconnected world more secure.

What Our Champions Say

  • We value the work you put into the campaigns and appreciate your efforts to help keep our customers safe.

  • As a small-sized company, with a non-existent cyber budget, we appreciate the free resources that are provided each year. This does help out cyber awareness campaigns tremendously.

  • Great effort that goes into the annual cyber security awareness month campaigns. I see it growing and being adopted more and more every year.
