Cyber Groups with Local Chapters You Can Join Today!

Cybersecurity is a community, even if it might not always feel like it with your nose buried in your laptop.

There are groups worldwide aimed at letting cybersecurity professionals and enthusiasts connect, network, share, and even share a few memes. Many of these organizations have in-person gatherings as well as virtual events.

Guide to cybersecurity and infosec networking groups

Are you passionate about cybersecurity and eager to connect with others who feel the same? Join a local chapter of one of these cybersecurity organizations! They are an excellent way to network, learn, and advance your career. 

Just a note: while many of these options are organizations with local chapters, some of them are online communities, and others are affordable conferences that travel around the country. We wanted to include as many options as possible so you can get going! We also highlighted if college students and career changers can join each organization.

1. ISC2 - International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium

Best known for certifications like the CISSP, ISC2 has local chapters providing networking, professional development, and education opportunities. This group has almost 38,000 involved members living across the world. There are more than 150 chapters of ISC2 in 50 countries. Whether you’re looking to boost your skills or connect with other professionals, ISC2 chapters offer something for everyone. Students and individuals can join ISC2 chapters.  

What to expect: 

  • Earn Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits

  • Opportunities to speak at events 

2. Convene  

An in-person conference held twice a year, the National Cybersecurity Alliance (that's us!) launched Convene to gather the cybersecurity and IT community. Because we think a people-centered approach is vital to the success of any security program, this event focuses on the intersection of people and technology. Convene event locations rotate around the country to reach as many as possible. Join us and see why both the speakers and the audience make this event special! Anyone interested in security, including students and career-changers, can come Convene with us!

3. ISACA - Information Systems Audit and Control Association

ISACA's local chapters provide resources for IT governance, risk management, and cybersecurity. The organization has over 200 chapters across the globe. This group is perfect for staying informed on best practices and the latest in the industry. Professionals, recent grads, students, and career changers can join ISACA.  

What to expect: 

  • Training sessions and workshops

  • Certification opportunities

  • Networking events  

4. OWASP - Open Web Application Security Project

OWASP is a non-profit focusing on software security, offering a range of open-source projects and tools. They have over 250 chapters. Local chapters host meetups, workshops, and conferences, making it an excellent community for those interested in web application security. Students and career-changers are welcome to join OWASP.  

What to expect:  

  • Access to free security tools and resources 

  • Opportunities to volunteer in community projects 

  • Hands-on workshops for skill development 

5. ISSA - Information Systems Security Association

ISSA chapters are a hub for cybersecurity professionals to share knowledge, engage in educational events, and expand their networks. Membership is affordable, and there are dozens of chapters throughout the globe. It’s a great way to stay active within the cybersecurity community. Students can join at a discounted rate! 

What to expect: 

  • Educational webinars and seminars

6. WiCyS - Women in CyberSecurity

WiCyS is dedicated to promoting the advancement of women in the cybersecurity field. It is a great way to connect with other women nearby and through a great online community. Members can get mentoring, networking, and professional development, creating a supportive environment for women at all stages of their careers. Cybersecurity professionals and students can join! 

What to expect:  

  • Career resources tailored for women in cybersecurity 

  • Speaking opportunities Inclusive community events

7. CSA - Cloud Security Alliance

The CSA's local chapters are a fantastic resource for those working in or interested in cloud security. Over 126,000 people are part of more than 100 CSA chapters across the globe. They offer many educational and networking opportunities focused on cloud computing and security best practices. Students and the cloud security curious are welcome to join! 

What to expect:

  • Access to cloud security training and certification

  • Networking with cloud experts

  • Expert insight into the latest cloud technologies

8. InfraGard

InfraGard is a partnership between the FBI and the private sector, focusing on protecting critical infrastructure. Local chapters around the United States offer unique insights into national security and opportunities to collaborate on protecting critical assets. Students and individuals interested in cyber can join, but you must be over 18, be a U.S. citizen, and agree to an FBI background check. 

What to expect:  

  • Access to threat intelligence 

  • Opportunities to contribute to national security efforts

  •  Networking with public and private sector professionals 

9. FIRST - Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams

 FIRST connects incident response teams across various industries to improve collaboration and response strategies. You can join as a team or as an individual. If you’re involved in incident response, FIRST is a great community to learn from and contribute to. While individuals can join, you must already work in the field and be nominated by an existing member to join FIRST.  

What to expect:

10. SANS Institute 

For decades, the SANS Institute has developed a community for security professionals. The multiple online communities of SANS are lively and friendly, making it the perfect place for cybersecurity workers at all levels.  Depending on your field, SANS has specialized forums for even more connection. Individuals can join, so SANS is great for students or anyone thinking about a career in cyber.
